Rose Jones, or Ms. Jones, as we call her in YMLA, has been the high school counselor and dream team member here at YMLA for 12 wonderful years. But did you know before Ms. Jones came to YMLA; she had been a counselor for 8+ years. In total she has worked in counseling for 20 whole years!
Ms. Jones identifies herself as a dreamer. As a dreamer, you can do anything you put your mind to. Which is exactly what she does. Some of her favorite things she likes doing are cooking, shopping, traveling, playing the violin, (which many people don’t know) and right now her favorite thing to do is watch cooking shows. But in college her favorite activity was racket ball.
Ms. Jones went to Texas Southern University for her undergraduate in business, where she learned many things. One of her favorite classes was speech and communication. In this class she learned some important skills such as “walk and talk”. She went to Prairie View A&M for her masters in counseling. She loved college and said “College provided me with a lot of opportunities because without college I wouldn’t be here today helping students and people.”
Ms. Jones’ main goal here at the YMLA is to make sure that every scholar follows their dream and to help them reach that dream. She advises every scholar to take advantage of their high school’s support and connections because you will never get it back once you leave.
Ms. Jones tells high school students to go to college because it lets you become what you want to be. It also allows scholars to have more time to figure out what they want to do in life. She advises us to keep an open mind when we go to college as it will amplify our learning for the rest of our life. Since Ms. Jones is a dreamer, it makes sense that she left me with some advice “If you want it and you work for it, anything is possible, the only thing that can stop you, is you”.
