At Young Men’s Leadership Academy, senior scholar and athlete Jimmy Glen has made a name for himself both on and off the basketball court. Known for his perseverance and dedication and intelligence, Jimmy has learned many lessons throughout high school that go beyond academics. His favorite subject has been U.S. History, taught by Ms. Carter, who he describes as “down to the heart, down to the bone,my favorite teacher.” With the encouragement of strong mentors, like Ms. Carter and his grandmother, Jimmy has worked hard to balance his studies, athletics, and growth.
One of the most important lessons Jimmy has learned is that “going when you don’t think you can is important because you have to keep trying.” This belief has carried him through difficult times, especially when staying ahead in his college-level classes, which was one of his toughest challenges. He has also overcome a major obstacle when he broke his leg playing basketball two years ago. Despite the injury, he recovered quickly and returned to the game stronger than ever, showing his resilience and determination.
Jimmy also values the mentors and role models who have shaped his journey. He credits his grandmother, who he describes as “lively and bubbly,” for inspiring him to keep a positive outlook. On the court, one of his proudest memories is scoring 30 points against rival school Dunbar, a moment that he will always remember. While his college plans are undecided, Jimmy knows that his long-term goal is to be in a position where he can be a good father and role model. To him, true success is defined as “when I’m going the days that I don’t wanna go,” showing that perseverance is very important to him.
As Jimmy prepares for graduation he is grateful He advises his freshman self to live fully because “you never know what’s gonna happen.” From overcoming injuries and tough classes to creating unforgettable moments on the basketball court, Jimmy Glen’s story is one of hard work, persistence, and hope for the future. With the support of his mentors and his own determination, he can take the next step in life and continue building toward the success he envisions.
