In the social media world, many people who use apps such as X, Instagram, and TikTok are familiar with the social media website barstool. Barstool is an American Blog website founded by Dave Portnoy in 2003; it started off as just a Boston Newspaper but grew to be the Billion Dollar media empire that people now know today.
Due to its popularity and the content that it produces many high schools find inspiration and start barstool accounts for their school, often posting sports related content supporting their athletics department taunting other schools and getting the students hyped for games. However, some barstools tend to post photos of other students with the caption being “Almost Friday”, these posts show embarrassing photos of students and often generate good laughs out of other students.
Recently at my school the barstool page got taken down, the page had almost 200 followers and seemed to get some good laughs out of everyone with all the embarrassing pictures that were posted but many students didn’t like being posted and once word got out it was immediately deleted The question that was asked was “Should schools have a barstool account?” In my opinion I believe yes but some content shouldn’t be posted, I believe school barstools should be a way to support their school’s athletic teams and getting students to pop out and watch the games, However our schools barstool didn’t really do that as it mostly just posed photos and videos of other students which I believe kind of defeats the purpose of an original barstool account.
Barstool is apart of the high school culture, and I strongly believe we should have one as it brings entertainment to the student body and can also be very informative updating students on events going around, it can also be a way for former students to reflect back on the memories of their high school lives and reminisce about good times.
I personally don’t blame my school for taking down the barstool account because of all the embarrassing photos and videos of other students that were posted on there which even resulted in some students getting in trouble for some of the things they were doing on camera, however if our school wasn’t to have a barstool account I feel as if the school would be kind of dry and boring compared to when the barstool account was around which led to many students making it a controversial topic and also saw many students reflecting on some of the goofy pictures that were posted. If our barstool account was created during basketball and soccer season then it could have been even better as it would be informative on when games are and what the scores are for people who unfortunately could not make it to support and watch.
Overall, even with the recent controversy surrounding our school with talk about the barstool account I think we should still have one as it can be very engaging and entertaining for the students posting funny pictures and funny videos, even though it sort of defeated the purpose of a barstool account by not really posting anything sports related it still had a good run and got a good laugh out of many other scholars whilst also creating memories so that students who went through the experience could reflect on in the future and have a good laugh about it then. With that being said I see where the school was coming from when they removed the barstool account, but they should have at least given a warning or asked to take down certain posts instead of the whole page at least that’s how I feel about the situation.’
